Our History

History of IoD Ghana

In October 1997, Commonwealth Heads of State met in Edinburgh, Scotland and resolved to promote good corporate governance within the Commonwealth. The
Commonwealth Secretariat was requested to implement the initiative of the Heads of State.
In April 1998, the Commonwealth Secretariat held a workshop in London on corporate governance. Twenty four (24) nations were represented.
The Commonwealth Association for Corporate Governance was formed as an umbrella body and the medium to achieve the initiative.
In June 1998, the Commonwealth Secretariat, The Commonwealth Association for Corporate Governance and the State Enterprises Commission of Ghana organised a three-day workshop in Accra.
At the end of the workshop participants unanimously agreed on the need for the formation of an Institute of Directors-Ghana.
A Task Force was set up to prepare the grounds for its establishment.
The Institute was registered on 21 st May, 1999 with an eleven member Council.

Books and Publications

1. Best Practice Guide (Directors Handbook) – 2015

First published in 2011 it gives a detailed account of all that directors need to know. The old stocks that were printed have been sold out. The current version has been reviewed and the second edition to be published as soon as funds are obtained.

2. The Chief Executive Officer

This is a second publication and the completed manuscript has already been approved by the Council of the Institute. It is anticipated that funds can be obtained so that the books are released by the first quarter of 2016.

Forum

The Institute organises an Annual Corporate Governance Forum where participants discuss topical issues germane to good corporate governance practice. Participants learn how to become top performers and stay motivated.

Mr. Justice Awuku-Sao

Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Justice Awuku Sao, a chartered accountant, is a man who has a wealth of experience in the corporate setting. Currently, he is the Chief Executive, Institute of Directors-Ghana. In this brief interview, he gave some insights as per how the society would be better off if men and women saddled with the management of corporate organizations, and indeed governance at various levels in Ghana, are mandated to undergo some directorship training.

 

Mr. Frederick Ofosu Darko

Frederick Ofosu Darko is a Management Consultant, an Entrepreneur and a Master Trainer who works extensively with Senior Management, Directors and Boards, providing excellent training, expert consultancy, facilitation and business coaching. He is an expert in Corporate Governance and Strategy. He is a resource person for the Institute of Directors, Ghana since April, 2007 and has been consulting and providing training for a number of public, private and non-governmental institutions such as Graphic Communications Group, National Insurance Commission, Engen Ghana Limited, CARE International, etc. Frederick Ofosu Darko is the CEO of Terabyte Consult Ltd which specializes in providing Training, Management/IT consulting services. He has worked as a lecturer at Thames Valley University and Jeff Wooller College both in London.

He has Master of Science Financial and Legal Management and Post Graduate Diploma in Business Information Management both from Thames Valley University in the United Kingdom. He is a Chartered Member of Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (London) and the current President of the Institute of Directors, Ghana.

He has a keen interest in Human Resource Development, E-business Management especially using the concept of IS/IT strategic approach in managing Information and Business Systems and Technology. His interest also covers using Knowledge Management Concepts and Processes to help develop and conserve corporate memory.

He is now pursuing a doctorate in management with SMC University in Switzerland

Mr. Eric Keyman Defor

Vice President

Mr_Eric_Keyman_DeforEric Keyman Defor is the Vice Chairman of IOD Ghana for the period 2014-2016. Eric is a businessman and serial entrepreneur. He has had extensive business experience since 1984 having managed a number of businesses that include Raduclean Ltd, a cleaning and furnishing services company, Total Safety Ltd, a fire protection, safety and security company, Watershed Gh. Ltd, a geodetic engineering and construction company.

Eric is currently the Managing Director of Vivendi Construction Co. Ltd, a fast growing building and road Construction company and also CEO of Cowrie Investment Fund Ltd, a real estate fund.

He serves as Chairman of the Boards of Quandzie and Associates, a legal firm and Goldengate Travel and Tours Ltd, a tour and hospitality company. He is also a member of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Ghana (CCCG) and the Canadian Council on Africa (CCA).

Eric serves his community through the Rotary Club of Accra, Osu RE of which he has held various offices and been a three(3) time President. He also supports the activities of Special Attention Project (SAP) an NGO focused on children with learning disabilities in Ghana. He also served as PTA Chairman and board member of Corpus Christi Catholic School from 2000 – 2004.

Eric is passionate about leadership and has a vision to establish a leadership training institute to train the youth to become honest and responsible leaders. He is a motivational speaker and has delivered talks to Rotaract Clubs and Youth groups in the Catholic Church.
